Time to Kill Now is Offering Memberships

Like you, I have a horror of excessive panhandling. At the same time, if there’s no way to support the site, nobody will. Thus, Time to Kill Now is now taking subscriptions for a small (or a medium!) monthly fee. In exchange for your generous support, you get regular posts a week early, and get access to bonus content that will primarily appeal to those interested enough to pay for it.

If you’d like to support the site, please do become a subscriber and choose the tier that is most comfortable for you. Subscriptions are run through this site, with payments handled securely through Stripe and your information kept here rather than used on someone else’s marketing list, but if you prefer to use your Patreon account, there is also a Time to Kill Now Patreon. As to the tier names, if you know you know.

Time to Kill Now is and shall remain a free-friendly site. You will not have to pay a dollar, not even a Canadian dollar, to get the good stuff. The goal of taking subscriptions is not just to make money and allow you to show your appreciation, but also to improve the free content that the site will continue to deliver as regularly as practical.

1. Subscribers get my digressions and excessive notes, which means non-subscribers do not. Every time I research a post I stumble over a rabbit hole somewhere that’s too interesting to just ignore. Those who subscribe for bonus posts will get access to those game trails I go down, which means that regular visitors, just passing through, won’t have to deal with them. Nerds like me get the notes; the humble reader is spared them. I get to work out all those things that I found too interesting to not say somewhere, but somebody who just wants to know about Tony Hand doesn’t have to put up with them. Better for everyone.

2. Subscribers help make the site better. For example, most of the graphics for this site are AI-generated. I would dearly like to hire a human artist now and then, but human artists cost money that’s hard to justify out-of-pocket. With some cash flow, it becomes possible to commission occasional nice-to-haves like that, make some of the site services a bit more polished and pleasant, and generally make the experience a little better for everyone, paid or not. With income, I can cut fewer corners while keeping the site indefinitely sustainable.

3. Subscribers get early access to normal posts. Regular posts will go up for $5-and-up subscribers a week before they are released to the world. It’s not an enormous perk, but it shows my appreciation.

4. Subscribers hold me accountable. If people are paying me their hard-earned Canadian dollars because they like what I write, I had better write something and I had better try to make it good. Writing for love of the game is all very well; writing for love of a readership that reciprocates that love is even better and longer-lasting. Nor will the bonus content be simply “I have a Stathead subscription and here’s the Excel sheet I got;” the posts may be more niche, but they won’t be sheer data dumps.

5. Subscribers give me money which I can exchange for goods and services. Hey, I’d like that. Why pretend I wouldn’t? And should this site be a commercially-viable proposition, I will naturally have more time to spend on it, which would please me and I hope you.

If you can’t afford a subscription, or simply don’t want one, Time to Kill Now is still for you. All the good stuff, all the conclusions, all the important stories, are still yours to read for as long as you like and always shall be. The archives are free, the featured posts are free, free free free. The goal has not changed: to write old-school, long-form, statistically-relevant hockey history for the masses. There will be no deluge of e-mails, no grand marketing push. All content, paid and free, will be accessible on timetokillnow.com; no muss and no fuss. This is simply an opportunity for the market to, if it so chooses, let the world kill more time on Time to Kill Now.
